After the end of the BBC’s Peaky Blinders in 2022, fans still wanted more.
In June 2024, Netflix confirmed that a Peaky Blinders movie would be happening with Cillian Murphy reprising his role as Tommy Shelby.
“It seems like Tommy Shelby wasn’t finished with me …” Murphy shared in a statement at the time. “It is very gratifying to be collaborating with Steven Knight and Tom Harper on the film version of Peaky Blinders. This is one for the fans.”
While further details about the film are scarce, it will be produced in association with BBC Film. Knight, who created the series, is writing the script, while Harper will direct (as he did in the first season).
“When I first directed Peaky Blinders over 10 years ago, we didn’t know what the series would become, but we did know that there was something in the alchemy of the cast and the writing that felt explosive,” Harper told Netflix in June 2024. “Peaky has always been a story about family — and so it’s incredibly exciting to be reuniting with Steve and Cillian to bring the movie to audiences across the world on Netflix.”
The original Peaky Blinders series, which ran from 2013 to 2022, followed the exploits of the Peaky Blinders crime gang in the direct aftermath of World War I. The show starred Murphy, Paul Anderson, Sophie Rundle, Joe Cole and the late Helen McCrory.

Murphy confirmed in June 2024 that he is set to reprise his role as Tommy Shelby in the film.
Alongside Murphy, Netflix announced in June 2024 that Rundle would be returning for the film. Newcomers Rebecca Ferguson, Tim Roth, Stephen Graham, Ned Dennehy, Packy Lee, Ian Peck, Jay Lycurgo and Barry Keoghan will also be joining the cast.
It is unknown whether Anderson and Cole will have roles in the movie.
The Peaky Blinders series finale left off with Tommy starting the next chapter of his life. While it is unknown what story lines the film will cover, Knight noted that the movie will be set during World War II and will be “the same but different.”
“(Viewers should) expect the unexpected,” he told Radio Times in March 2023. “Yeah, it’s going to be fun.”
Deadline confirmed in September 2024 that production had officially begun for the Peaky Blinders movie in the U.K. Netflix confirmed that filming for the movie had wrapped three months later.
Netflix celebrated the movie’s wrap by releasing a first look at Keoghan’s new character alongside Murphy’s Tommy Shelby. The actors smiled on set while sporting similar newsboy caps.
Peaky Blinders will continue beyond the upcoming film, creator Knight hinted in February 2025.
Speaking to BBC BreakfastKnight said the work so far on the movie looks “fantastic” and will prove to be “a very fitting way to end this part of the Peaky story.”
When quizzed on what he meant by “this part,” Knight added: “It’s not over, let’s just put it like that. I’m not allowed to announce it, but I’m just saying that the world of Peaky will continue.”
